Astrakhan

Oblast (region) in the southwestern Russian Federation; area 44,100 sq km/17,027 sq mi; population (1996) 1,029,000. The capital is Astrakhan. The region is situated on the Lower Volga, adjacent to the Caspian Sea, and is an area of semi-desert lowland, mainly below sea level, with a continental climate. Its chief industries are fishing and the production of meat and salt; the area also sees the transshipment of oil from Baku. Agricultural products from the Volga-Akhtuba floodplain include melons and tomatoes, and there is cattle and sheep raising.
