Butare

Town in southern Rwanda, near the border with Burundi, 80 km/50 mi south of Kigale; population (1991) 28,600. The town is an important trade centre for the south of the country and also serves as a petroleum distribution centre. Local agriculture includes the raising of cattle and goats. Agricultural activities were severely disrupted by conflicts between Hutu and Tutsi tribal groups in the mid-1990s.
