AsyutCommercial centre in southern Egypt, near the west bank of the Nile, 322 km/200 mi south of Cairo; population (1996) 343,500, (2007 calc) 438,400. It is the capital of the governorate (area 1,600 sq km/618 sq mi; population (1996) 2,802,185) of the same name. One of the Nile dams is located here. An ancient Graeco-Egyptian city, it has many rock tombs of 11th and 12th-dynasty nobles.

A village in Asyut governorate, Upper Egypt, initially received about 500 "migrants. In October 1981, the police and the army had to be committed against members of underground Islamic organizations at Asyut, Egypt, where an antiterrorist operation was in progress. They also affirmed that some Christians had weapons and could, if they were not stopped in time, transform Egypt into a Christian nation, whose capital would be Asyut. |
