Atbara

Town in the Nile state of northern Sudan; population (2001 est) 110,500. The town stands on the right bank of the Nile, where it is joined by the seasonal Atbara River, and at the junction of main road and rail links to Khartoum, which is situated approximately 300 km/186 mi to the north. As well as being a major road, rail, and river junction, it is the Sudanese government's rail headquarters. Atbara is an agricultural and commercial centre, with railway workshops, a cement works, and an airport.

The town was the site of a battle between the Sudanese and the British in 1898.
