Atchison

Town and administrative headquarters of Atchison County, northeast Kansas, USA; population (1990) 10,700. It is situated on the Missouri River, 64 km/40 mi northwest of Kansas City. Founded in 1854 as a proslavery settlement, it grew rapidly as a wagon-train staging site, river port, and railroad terminus; the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad was chartered here in 1859. In a grain, fruit, and livestock producing area, the town has railway workshops and manufactures industrial alcohol, tools, textiles, and leather goods. It is home to Benedictine College (1858). The aviator Amelia Earhart was born here in 1898.
