spider monkey

Species of monkey found in Central and South America. Spider monkeys have long and very flexible limbs and a long, prehensile tail that is much used in climbing. The thumb is either absent or vestigial (much reduced).

Species

There are two species in the genus Ateles: the black spider monkey (or coaita ) A. paniscus lives in Brazil and the long-haired spider monkey (or marimonda) A. belzebuth lives in Guiana. The single species in the genus Brachyteles is the woolly spider monkey B. arachnoides, characterized by its long, woolly hair. It is quite large and varies from grey to brown or even yellow in colour.
