Athboy

Market town in County Meath, Republic of Ireland; population (2002) 1,850. It is situated on the River Athboy, 11 km/7 mi northwest of Trim. Fish-farming equipment is manufactured here. In the 14th-16th centuries Athboy was a stronghold of the English Pale (the territories under the rule of the English crown from the 14th to the 16th century).

Incorporated into the Protestant church are the ruins of a 15th-century Carmelite friary and nearby are remnants of the medieval town walls. Some 5 km/3 mi northeast of Athboy are the ruins of Rathmore Castle and church, now a national monument, with some fine sculptures.
