Athenry

Market town in County Galway, Republic of Ireland, on the River Clarenbridge, 35 km/22 mi west of Ballinasloe; population (2002) 2,900. Athenry was once an important Anglo-Norman stronghold; the ruins of a castle and a Dominican friary (both built by Meiler de Bermingham in the 13th century), town walls, gate, and five defensive towers remain from this period.
