Athens

City and administrative headquarters of Clarke County, northeast Georgia; population (1990) 45,700. It is situated on the Oconee River, 100 km/62 mi east-northeast of Atlanta. A trading centre for the region's poultry and cattle, Athens also manufactures textiles, clothing, cottonseed products, clocks, and electrical equipment.

Athens was founded in 1801 as the home of the University of Georgia, and incorporated as a city in 1806. The University of Georgia (chartered 1785) is the oldest chartered state university in the USA. The Georgia Museum of Art and State Botanical Gardens are also located in the city.
