Atherstone

Town in Warwickshire, England, 11 km/7 mi southeast of Tamworth; population (2001) 11,100. The ruins of the Cistercian abbey of Merevale, founded in 1149, are nearby. Atherstone's principal industries are clothes making and engineering.

Atherstone stands on Watling Street, a Roman road running from London to Wroxeter, near Shrewsbury.
