Atherton

Industrial town in Greater Manchester, England, 21 km/13 mi northwest of Manchester; population (2001) 11,000. Formerly a centre for coal and cotton, Atherton now produces textiles, nuts, and bolts.

Atherton was an early centre of Presbyterianism. The chapel, built in 1645, is now called Chowbent Unitarian Chapel, Chowbent being the name of the old town.

Atherton

Town in San Mateo County, north-central California, USA; population (1990) 7,200. It is located between Menlo Park and Redwood City, 35 km/22 mi southeast of San Francisco. It is a largely residential suburb, established in 1860. It is home to Menlo College (1927).
