Atherton, Charles Gordon (1804-1853)

US politician. He was elected to Congress in 1836, and in 1838 he introduced the resolution ‘That all petitions relating to slavery, or its abolition, be laid on the table without debate’, which was passed by 120 votes to 78. He was a US senator 1843-49.
