Athlone, Alexander

Athlone, Alexander (Augustus Frederick William Alfred George) (1874–1957)

British administrator. He served in Matabeleland (now part of Zimbabwe) 1896 and in the South African War 1898–1900. He was governor general of South Africa 1923–31, and of Canada 1940–46.

The third son of the Duke of Teck, he married Princess Alice (born 1883), daughter of Prince Leopold, youngest son of Queen Victoria. Queen Mary, consort of George V, was his sister. In 1917 he took the surname Cambridge and the title Earl of Athlone, the previous line having become extinct 1844.
