University of London

University founded in London, England, in 1836. Originally it included King's College London (founded in 1829), which was solely for Church of England members, and University College, which was founded in 1826 to provide higher education free from religious tests. The University of London opened all its degrees to women in 1878, the first British university to do so.

Its complex substructure of smaller colleges had by the early 2000s, rationalized to 20 self-governing colleges and several affiliated institutes. Its well known colleges include Goldsmiths College, King's College London, the London School of Economics, and University College London.
