Athol

Town in Worcester County, north-central Massachusetts, USA; population (1998 est) 11,200. It is situated on the Millers River and the Mohawk Trail, 13 km/8 mi northeast of Quabbin Reservoir. It was a 19th-century industrial centre with paper and cotton mills and tanneries. It remains a manufacturing community, and industries include toys and tools. Surrounded by state parks, Athol is now the centre of a popular tourist area.
