Athy

Market town in County Kildare, Republic of Ireland; population (2002) 6,050. Athy is situated at the junction of the River Barrow and the Grand Canal, 64 km/40 mi southwest of Dublin. It has engineering industries and carpet manufacture. The 16th-century White's Castle (which replaced an earlier fortification) is on the bridge over the Barrow.

Athy was founded by the Normans and fell to Oliver Cromwell's army in 1650.

The town has a pentagonal Dominican church built 1963–65.

The Motte of Ardsaill (17 m/55 ft) 6 km/4 mi northeast of Athy includes ruins of later Cromwellian fortifications. This was the site of the Battle of Ardsaill, at which the English army was defeated by a force led by Edward Bruce in 1315.
