Atikokan

Atikokan

Town in Rainy River District, west Ontario, Canada; population (1991) 4,000. It is situated 180 km/112 mi west-northwest of Thunder Bay. In the 1940s it was the centre of an iron ore boom around Steep Rock Lake. Today there is some light industry, but Atikokan is primarily an outfitting base for Quetico Provincial Park to the south of the town.
