Atkins, Robert

    0.03 sec.

Atkins, Robert (1930–2003)

US cardiologist, nutritionist, and writer. Best known as a diet guru, his best-selling book Dr Atkins' Diet Revolution (1972) introduced the ‘Atkins diet’, a low-carbohydrate, high-protein, and high-fat eating programme that has remained both popular and controversial ever since.

He founded the Atkins Center for Complementary Medicine in New York City, to promote natural healing for conditions such as heart disease and diabetes, stressing the importance of diet. Critics of his nutritional approach claim that it can in fact increase the risk of heart problems, as well as kidney failure, nutritional deficiencies, and osteoporosis. The Atkins diet found a new wave of popularity, and controversy, with the publication of Dr Atkins' New Diet Revolution in 2000.
