Atlantic City

Seaside resort on Absecon Island, Atlantic County, southeastern New Jersey, USA; population (2000 est) 40,500. Formerly a family resort, Atlantic City is now a centre for casino gambling, which was legalized here in 1978 to help revive the flagging tourist trade. Other industries include shell fishing.

Features

It is noted for its ‘boardwalk’ and for being the basis of the Monopoly board game; the Miss America contest has been held here since 1921.

The transformation of this once barren island into a seaside resort progressed rapidly after the completion of the Camden and Atlantic Railroad in 1854, the year of the town's incorporation; this made Atlantic City easily accessible from the industrial cities of the northeast. Today the resort is linked directly by toll roads to Philadelphia (95 km/59 mi) and New York City (160 km/99 mi). Atlantic City is also a favourite location for conferences and conventions, the main auditorium of Convention Hall (seating 41,000) being the largest of its kind in the world.
