Atlantic CitySeaside resort on Absecon Island, Atlantic County, southeastern New Jersey, USA; population (2000 est) 40,500. Formerly a family resort, Atlantic City is now a centre for casino gambling, which was legalized here in 1978 to help revive the flagging tourist trade. Other industries include shell fishing.
