atmospheric circulation

Also found in: Wikipedia 0.23 sec.

atmospheric circulation

Large-scale movement of air within the lower atmosphere. Warm air at the Equator rises, creating a zone of low pressure. This air moves towards the poles, losing energy and becoming cooler and denser, until it sinks back to the surface at around 30° latitude, creating an area of high pressure. At the surface, air moves from this high pressure zone back towards the low pressure zone at the Equator, completing a circulatory movement.
