Atoms come in a variety of sizes, but scientists often refer to a nominal atomic size as the diameter of the smallest, most abundant atom--hydrogen. According to senior technical advisor, Dick James, "Chipworks has analyzed large feature sizes such as those found in passive optical devices and MEMS down to the atomic size features found in laser diodes". Remarkably, the same effect that suppresses intermingling within a crystal - atomic size mismatch - favors intermixing at its surface. |
