Attalid dynasty (lived 282–133 BC)

Greek rulers of the ancient Greek city of Pergamum in northwestern Asia Minor. The Attalids pursued an active cultural policy, with the aim of making Pergamum a successor to Athens in architecture and the arts.

Attalus I (ruled 241–197 BC) decisively defeated the invading Galatians (before 230 BC), and defeated Antiochus Hierax of Syria in three battles 229–228. He allied himself with Rome against Philip V of Macedon. His son Eumenes II (ruled 197–159 BC) drew Rome into conflict with Antiochus III. He was succeeded first by his brother Attalus II (ruled 159–138 BC), and then by his son Attalus III (ruled 138–133 BC), who bequeathed Pergamum to the Romans in his will.
