Atterberg, Kurt

Atterberg, Kurt (Magnus) (1887–1974)

Swedish composer and conductor. He composed in an undemanding style, and conducted much in Europe.

After training as a civil engineer, he studied music at the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm under Anders Hallén, and later at Munich, Berlin, and Stuttgart. He was music critic of the newspaper Stockholms Tidningen from 1919.

Works

Opera and theatre

five operas; pantomime-ballets; incidental music for plays.

Orchestral

nine symphonies (one in memory of Schubert); nine suites; Swedish Rhapsody; symphonic poem Le Fleuve; Rondeau rétrospectif and The Song for orchestra; symphonic poem for baritone and orchestra; concertos for violin, cello, piano, and horn.

Chamber

three string quartets; cello and piano sonata.

Other

Requiem (1914); Järnbäraland/The Land of Iron-Carriers, for chorus and orchestra (1919).
