Au Sable River

Au Sable River

Name of two US rivers, in Michigan and New York State. The Au Sable River in the northeast of Michigan is some 129 km/80 mi long, and is formed by the confluence of several branches near Grayling, and empties into Lake Huron at Au Sable. There are several hydroelectric dams on its lower course. The Au Sable (or Ausable) River in northeastern New York is 32 km/20 mi long is formed by the convergence of the West Branch (40 km/25 mi long), which rises near Lake Placid, and the East Branch (48 km/30 mi long), which rises in the Adirondacks. Joining at the town of Au Sable Forks, the combined river flows northeast to Lake Champlain, 16 km/10 mi south of Plattsburgh.

It was not until 1903 that its nesting range was discovered near the Au Sable River in Crawford County, Michigan.
