Aubusson

Town in the département of Creuse, on the River Creuse, central France; 20 km/12 mi southeast of Gueret; population (1990) 5,320. Its carpet and tapestry industry dates from the 15th century.

Tapestries in the Gobelin and Beauvais styles, and pile carpets in the Savonnerie style, are still made here on hand looms. However, the name Aubusson is now generally taken to mean a pileless French tapestry type of carpet.
