Aucassin et Nicolette

13th-century French narrative in prose and verse. Its verse sections show a technique similar to that employed in the chanson de geste, in that each pair of lines is sung to the same tune constantly repeated, each section being rounded off by a single line sung to a different tune. Its alternation between prose and verse, however, classifies it as a chante-fable.
