Bishop Auckland

Town in Durham, England, 14 km/9 mi southwest of Durham City; population (2001) 2,800. Bishop Auckland has engineering, electrical, and other light industries.

In the northeast of the town is the bishop's palace, Auckland Castle, originally built by Anthony Bec during the reign of Edward I. The palace has been the country residence of the Bishops of Durham since the 12th century and is now the official residence. It lies in Bishop's Park, a park of 324 ha/800 acres.
