The fortified medieval town of Carcassonne, southwest France. It stands on the right bank of the Aude River.

River in southeast France, which rises in the département of Pyrénées-Orientales, then flows north and east through the département of Aude and into the Mediterranean Sea near Narbonne; length 210 km/130 mi. Carcassonne is the main town through which it passes.
