Oudenaarde

Town in the province of East Flanders, western Belgium, on the River Schelde, 28 km/17 mi south-southwest of Ghent; population (1991) 27,160. It is a historic centre of tapestry-making and carpet-weaving. The town was the site of the Battle of Oudenaarde during the War of the Spanish Succession. The town hall dates from 1526-37.
