Auerbach, (Arnold Jacob) ‘Red’ (1917–2006)

US basketball coach. Coach of the Boston Celtics 1950–66, his team won nine National Basketball Association (NBA) championships, eight of them consecutively. Famous for lighting a cigar after each victory, he retired from coaching in 1966 to become the team's general manager. The NBA coach of the year is now awarded the Red Auerbach Trophy. He was elected to basketball's hall of fame in 1968.
