Auch

Capital of the French département of Gers, on the River Gers: population (1999) 21,900. It has footwear industries and trade in brandy, horses, and poultry. Auch is the seat of an archbishop, and has a Gothic cathedral.

It used to be under the protection of the counts of Gascony and Armagnac, and was the capital of both former provinces.
