Aunis

Former province of France, corresponding to parts of the present départements of Charente-Maritime and Deux-Sèvres. It was united to the French crown in 1271 after having been the property of the Plantagenets, and was again in English hands between 1360 and 1373. The capital was La Rochelle.

This paper seeks to answer this question by examining the practice of civil justice under the revolutionary institution of the justice of the peace in the department of Charente-Inferieure, which roughly corresponded to the historical provinces of Aunis and Saintonge.
