In alternative medicine, ascertaining a person's state of health from the colour and luminosity of the aura, the ‘energy envelope’ of the physical body commonly claimed to be seen by psychics. A study carried out by the Charing Cross Hospital Medical School in London, England, confirmed that the aura can be viewed by high frequency electrophotography techniques and is broadly indicative of states of health, but concluded that aura diagnosis cannot identify specific abnormalities.

The direct observation of aura is called the Kirlian effect, after Semion Kirlian who developed a visual technique in the 1920s to image aura using simulated electrophotonic response in a subject.
