Aurangabad

City in Maharashtra state, west-central India, 290 km/180 mi northeast of Mumbai (formerly Bombay); population (1991) 592,000. It is the most convenient centre for visitors to the Ajanta and Ellora caves. It is one of India's fastest growing cities, with an expanding industrial and commercial base. It has an airport, and medical and engineering colleges. Marathwada University was founded in 1958.

Aurangabad was founded in 1610 and later in the 17th century it was the Mogul emperor Aurangzeb's capital: he built a replica of the Taj Mahal for his wife, called the Bibika Makhbara.
