Aurelian Wall

Fortified wall surrounding ancient Rome. This defensive structure was begun by the emperor Aurelian in AD 271 after he had defeated an invasion of Italy by the Goths and other Germanic tribes, and it was completed by the emperor Probus in 280. It was constructed of Roman concrete, with brick facing. Substantial ruins exist.

The wall had square towers at intervals of 14 m/13 yd, and 16 gates. Its circuit of about 20 km/12.5 mi can still be traced, and much is in an excellent state of preservation. The original wall was approximately 4 m/12 ft wide and had an average height of 6 m/20 ft.
