aurochs

Extinct species of long-horned wild cattle Bos primigenius that formerly roamed Europe, southwestern Asia, and North Africa. It survived in Poland until 1627. Black to reddish or grey, it was up to 1.8 m/6 ft at the shoulder. It is depicted in many cave paintings, and is considered the ancestor of domestic cattle.

While there are no known intermediaries between the massive auroch and the modern cow, some paleobiologists speculate that either ancient people domesticated a few miniature aurochs or the animal diminished in size during the last ice age.
