Auteuil, Daniel (1950– )

Algerian-born French actor. One of the leading French screen actors of the 1980s and 1990s, he first won international recognition as Ugolin in Jean de Florette (1986) and Manon des sources (1986). He has proved equally adept at comedy and drama.

Auteuil gave consistently excellent performances in Romuald et Juliette (1989), Un Coeur en hiver/A Heart in Winter (1992), Ma Saison préférée/My Favourite Season (1993), La Reine Margot/Queen Margot (1994), La fille sur le pont/Girl on the Bridge (1999), La Veuve de Saint Pierre/The Widow of Saint Pierre (2000), and Petites coupures/Small Cuts (2003). He was married to the actor Emmanuelle Béart.

He made his film debut in 1977. His other films include Quelques Jours avec moi/A Few Days with Me (1988), Ma Vie est un enfer/My Life is Hell (1991), La Séparation/The Separation (1994), Une Femme française (1995), and La huitième Jour/The Eighth Day (1996), for which he won a César (the French equivalent of a US Academy Award). In 1999 Auteuil made his English-language debut in the thriller The Lost Son.
