Les Cayes

Town and port lying on the Bay of Cayes, on the southwest coast of the Republic of Haiti; population (1997) 36,000. It is the capital of the Sud department and the fourth-largest town in Haiti. Les Cayes is also the commercial centre of the leading coffee-producing area in the country.

Les Cayes was plagued by disease and pirates in colonial times. The town was damaged by fire in 1908 and by a hurricane in 1954.
