Avalokiteśvara

In Mahāyāna Buddhism, one of the most important bodhisattvas, seen as embodying compassion. He is an emanation of Amida Buddha. In China, as Kuan Yin, and Japan, as Kannon, he is confused with his female consort, becoming the popular goddess of mercy.
