Avellino

Capital of Avellino province in Campania region, southern Italy, situated in the Sabato valley, 45 km/28 mi east of Naples; population (1990 est) 55,900. It is a marketing and processing centre for local agricultural products, and has a cathedral, partly 10th-century. A monastery built in 1119 on nearby Monte Vergine receives an annual pilgrimage of many thousands. The city was badly damaged by an earthquake in 1980.
