Avengers, the

British television series (1961–69), combining espionage, mystery, and, occasionally, science fiction. The series followed the fortunes of cultured British intelligence officer John Steed (Patrick Macnee) and his female partner as they did battle with underworld figures, using their wits and physical prowess to extricate themselves from dangerous situations. Steed's sidekicks included Cathy Gale (Honor Blackman, 1961–64), Emma Peel (Diana Rigg, 1966–68), and Tara King (Linda Thorson, 1968–69).

A sequel, The New Avengers, featuring Steed and his new accomplices Purdey (Joanna Lumley) and Mike Gambit (Gareth Hunt), ran from 1976 to 1977. The original series, which continued to be broadcast on British television in the 1990s, acquired a cult following, and a feature film adaptation starring Ralph Fiennes and Uma Thurman was released in 1998.
