Avilés

Town in the autonomous community of Asturias, northern Spain; population (2001) 83,200. Avilés forms part of the most important iron- and steel-producing region in Spain (although its main factory, Ensidesa, built in the 1950s at Gen Franco's instruction, is now out-of-date and unprofitable); there are coal mines nearby, and zinc, aluminium, and glass are also produced.
