morphineNarcotic alkaloid, C17H19NO3, derived from opium and prescribed only to alleviate severe pain. Its use produces serious side effects, including nausea, constipation, tolerance, and addiction, but it is highly valued for the relief of the terminally ill. The risk of addiction arising from the use of morphine for pain relief is much lower than for recreational use (about 1 in 3,000) as the drug is processed differently by the body when pain is present.
