Aviz

Town in Portalegre district, east-central Portugal; population (1991) 1,900. It gave its name to a royal dynasty, which began with John I of Portugal, and to an order of knighthood (see knighthood, orders of).

Among treasures on show are a papal Golden Rose offered in 1881 to Isabel, Princess Imperial of Brazil, for abolishing slavery, as well as some 30 Golden Fleeces, the order founded in 1430 by Duke Philip III of Burgundy to celebrate his marriage to Portuguese princess Isabel of Aviz.
The third surviving son of King John of Portugal from the House of Aviz, Henry earned the nickname under which he has gone down in history by becoming one of the most successful armchair travellers there has ever been.
