Avondale

Town in Maricopa County, south-central Arizona, USA; population (1990) 16,200. It is a residential suburb lying 24 km/15 mi west of Phoenix city centre. Long the commercial and service centre of an irrigated region producing cotton, grain, and other crops, it has grown rapidly since the 1970s. Luke Air Force Base is to the northwest.
