OudhRegion of north India, now part of Uttar Pradesh state. An independent kingdom before it fell under Mogul rule, Oudh regained independence 1732–1856, when it was annexed by Britain. Its capital was Lucknow, centre of the Indian Mutiny 1857–58. In 1877 it was joined with Agra, from 1902 as the United Provinces of Agra and Oudh, renamed Uttar Pradesh in 1950. | From its establishment in 1775 until its destruction, the Awadh court at Lucknow was an oasis of richesse and refinement, spawning a distinctive 'nawabi' style of architecture that fused Oriental motifs with colonial grandeur. He is able to trace the complex and often traumatic negotiations over curricular content and teaching methods that evolved in pedagogical settings like the Dars-i-Nizamiyya, as Mughal power was supplanted by the Shia nawabs of Awadh, the various phases of colonial rule, and finally the prospect of post-colonial regimes.
