Ayers Rock

Vast ovate mass of pinkish sandstone rock in Northern Territory, Australia; 335 m/1,110 ft high and 9 km/6 mi around. It lies within the Ayers Rock-Mount Olga National Park and is famed for its stark rise from the surrounding land and for the striking orange-red colour which it assumes at sunset. For the Aboriginals, who have officially owned the Rock since 1985 and whose paintings decorate its caves, Ayers Rock has magical significance.

It is named after Henry Ayers, a former premier of South Australia.
