Aylesford

Town in Kent, England; population (2001) 4,600. It is situated 5 km/3 mi northwest of Maidstone on the River Medway. Aylesford has a restored Carmelite friary which now manufactures furniture and pottery. The town also has large paper mills.

Preston Hall, 1 km/0.6 mi to the south of Aylesford, is now a hospital. St Peter's church, partly Norman, contains some 15th-century brasses. A megalithic burial chamber, Kits Coty, is 3 km/2 mi away.
