Ayrer, Jakob (1540-1605)

German dramatist. His works comprise 36 humorous pieces and 30 dramas. Many of his plays are in the Fastnachtspiel tradition of Hans Sachs, whereas others are dramatized romances and histories.

He was a legal officer of the city of Nuremberg. Through the visits of English acting troupes, he was influenced by contemporary English drama.
