Ayrshire

Former county of southwest Scotland, on the Firth of Clyde, which was merged to form the greater part of four districts in Strathclyde region in 1975.

Ayrshire was merged into the districts of Kyle and Carrick, Kilmarnock and Loudoun, and Cumnock and Doon Valley, and forming the greater part of the district of Cunninghame in 1975. It is now divided into three unitary authorities, which bear its name – East, North, and South.

Ayrshire

Breed of hardy dairy cattle originating in the former county of Ayrshire, Scotland, in the latter part of the 18th century and considered to be the only special dairy breed to have originated in the British Isles. Their body colour ranges from almost pure white to almost all cherry red or brown. They are found worldwide. Their beef quality is of secondary importance.

Bannatyne, secretary to John Knox, recounts a singular course of oppression practised on one of those titulars abbots, by the Earl of Cassilis in Ayrshire, whose extent of feudal influence was so wide that he was usually termed the King of Carrick.
From his northern home he drifted to Ayrshire, and settled down in the village of Alloway as a gardener.
Boswell was a Scotch gentleman, born in 1740, the son of a judge who was also laird of the estate of Auchinleck in Ayrshire, near the English border.
